We all know that being active and engaging in physical activity is great for our health. However, there are times when we are so overwhelmed with work and personal engagements that we find it difficult to take time for a workout. To combat this challenge and build a habit of participating regularly in physical activity, here are 6 tips to motivate yourself to workout, even when you don’t feel up to it.
Establish Your Why
When you established your “why”, you will be reluctant to skip workouts. There are various reasons to maintain a physical active lifestyle. Some of these reasons include, feeling more energetic, improve overall fitness, manage stress, tone and increase muscle mass, manage weight and so on. Whatever your “why” is, use it to motivate you every time you don’t feel like working out.
Set Clear Goals
Now that you established your “why,” it is important to set clear goals that will allow you to achieve what you desire. Start by setting small clearly defined goals that are aligned with what you want to accomplish. For example, if your “why” is to lose or maintain your weight, start with your daily goals, then set your weekly goals, before setting your monthly goals. Starting small and build up gradually is a great way to stay motivated.
Plan Ahead
To be consistent and workout regularly, you must plan. Put your workout time on your daily schedule. If you can set a particular time each day for workout that is great, but if you can’t, find a time each day that best fits your schedule. There may be days when you may need pack a bag with your workout clothes and shoes and squeeze your workout in between meetings, during your lunch break or after work before heading home.
Have Fun
Do exercises that you enjoy and include a variety of workouts in your program. Don’t just do gym exercises. Go on a scenic walk, train with a professional, workout with a partner or a group. You can also participate in a dance class or have your own private dance party. Try different sports that you are interested in or have always been curious to experience. Also, listening to your favorite playlist while you are exercising is a great way to stay motivated and have fun in the process.
Workout With Others
If you desire company to workout effectively and consistently, join a group or solicit friends to workout with. Having fitness friends can increase the amount of exercise you do. Also, this can help to motivate you to not skip a workout session when you have friends to hold you accountable.
Document and Review your Progress
Being aware of your results and progress is helpful. Document and review the progress you are making and make the necessary adjustments that will move you closer to your goals. Also, don’t forget to celebrate along the way, every step forward is worth celebrating and will serve as motivation to keep working out.
