Do want to improve your fitness, but do not know how to start your fitness journey or feel overwhelmed by the thoughts of facing the gym equipment? We understand that any fitness journey can be intimidating, but once you started, you will realize that you have all that is required to live a fit and healthy life. The following six tips will help you start your fitness journey and stay engaged and motivated.
Assess Your Fitness Level
It is important to know your level of fitness, your strengths and weaknesses before embarking on your new fitness routines. You also need to know if you have any medical concerns or if there are certain physical activities or particular exercise that you should avoid or minimize. If you are unsure of your health status as it related to your participation into physical activities, you may want to get a physical examination done by your primary care physician. This will give you peace of mind and help you jump start your fitness journey with knowledge of yourself and promote confidence to tackle each workout.
Get Goals
In order to be successful and consistent, you must have clearly defined goals. It could be that your reason for starting your fitness journey is to lose or maintain weight, to build muscle, or to improve your aerobic or anaerobic capacities. Knowing why you started will keep you going when things get challenging.
Be Committed
Being committed and serious about what you want to achieve on your fitness journey is important to help you achieve your objectives. If your plan is to work out three times, five times or every day of the week, you must make a conscious effort to make sure that you stay the course. There will be times when you do not feel like working out, but because you made a commitment to yourself and have clearly define goals, you will find the will-power to resist the urge of skipping workouts. In the words of Haile Gebrselassie, “Once you have commitment, you need the discipline and hard work to get you here.”
Take Small Steps
It has been said that small steps are better than one big heap. Small progress each day can add up to the big wins. Start with small doses of workouts. For example, start your strength training with body weight exercises, then slowly progress by adding light weights, and increase as needed. Some great body weight exercises include, double leg squats, lunges, push-ups, wall sits, lunge jumps, sit ups, planks and so forth.
Get Expert Help
If you are not experienced in creating an exercise plan, seek guidance from a coach, personal trainer or someone who have the expertise to devise a program that is align with your desires and can help you achieve your fitness goals.
Celebrate Every Accomplishment
Every workout you completed or even fail to complete is worth celebrating. The objective is always to go into a workout and be committed to execute it in its entirety. However, if you ever find yourself in a dilemma where you fail to perform everything on your workout schedule, don’t be too hard on yourself, celebrate what you have accomplished and be prepared to conquer the next workout session. Applaud yourself each day for the progress you made. By celebrating your small achievements, you will gain confidence and a sense of purpose as you continue to work towards your ultimate goal.
Summary
Start your fitness journey by accessing your fitness level, set clearly defined goals, be committed to your goals and take small steps. If you are in doubt about an effective exercise regimen, consult an expert for guidance, and celebrate all your accomplishments, whether they are small or huge.
